Andy and I got addicted to these very quickly! They are delicious and so easy to make with an air fryer! If you store them in an airtight container they last for a few days outside of the fridge, so they’re ideal for snack prepping throughout the week.

Since my step son is not a big fan of sweet potatoes I tried this same recipe using Russet potatoes and it worked perfectly (I made them for him as a side dish but they were gone before dinner even started….)

I experimented also with radish, rutabaga, green beans, parsnips, and carrots:

  • Parsnips and carrots turned out great. I haven’t tried leaving them in an airtight container for a couple of days, so I don’t know if they stay crispy like sweet potatoes do. I’d suggest to cut them sidewise for longer and thin chips, unless the diameter of the vegetable is as big as the diameter of an average chip.

  • Radishes and rutabaga turned out too bitter for my taste, and a bit soggy. Some experimenting with time and temperature may improve the texture.

  • Green beans turned out quite tasty, but not crispy. Next time I’ll probably just cook them until they’re about to turn brown, without trying to make them crispy.

As for buying an air fryer,  I’ve heard many friends say that they’d like one but it’s too big and they have no room for it. The kitchen at my apartment is tiny, but after working a bit on improving the way I use the space available, it fit just fine and I use it A LOT.

Ingredients

  • Sweet potato, 1 (280 g or 0.6 lb with skin, 250 g or 0.5 lb peeled). This yields about 60 g of fries

  • Olive oil, 6 g (½ tbsp)

  • Salt to taste

  • Tools you might be missing:

Instructions

1. Peel the sweet potato and slice it with the mandoline (the one suggested in the ingredients list allows a thickness of about 2-3 mm). Wash the slices well, to prevent them from sticking to the air fryer basket.

2. Add ½ of the oil, sprinkle with salt to taste, and toss. Add the other ½ of the oil, sprinkle with salt to taste, and toss. Remember that you can always add salt afterwards.
If using an olive oil sprayer, the oil for this recipe (½ tbsp) is about 30 pumps. I normally use 20 before placing the vegetables in the air fryer and 10 half the way through the cooking.

3. Add the potatoes to the air fryer, trying to separate them from each other and distribute them around.

4. Set the air fryer to 350 F for 25 minutes. Every 5 minutes, open the basket, mix the potatoes carefully with two wooden spoons, scrape them from the bottom if they stick, and redistribute them evenly to make sure they cook as uniformly as possible. When they start to brown, decrease the time in between mixing to 2 minutes, to avoid burning. You might not need the full 25 minutes, as that depends on the type of air fryer and how crispy you like your chips.
A note on the crispiness: brown color means crispy, while orange color means fresh flavor. I like my chips half brown and half orange. It might take a little trial and error to get to the level of crispiness you like with your air fryer.

5. Let them cool for 15 minutes, as they will get crispier while cooling. Add salt to taste and ENJOY.

Storing

You can store these chips in an airtight container outside of the refrigerator for 4-5 days.

Notes

About the crispiness, brown color means crispy, while orange color means fresh flavor. I like my chips half brown and half orange. It might take a little trial and error to get to the level of crispiness you like with your air fryer.

Dividing into 2 batches instead of one will require less mixing during the cooking and less babysitting of the air fryer.
